Google Search Console (GSC)

A free Google tool that shows how your site performs in search results — the queries, clicks, impressions, and indexing issues behind your rankings.

Definition

Google Search Console is a free Google tool that reports how a website performs in organic search. It shows the queries that surface your pages, how many clicks and impressions they earn, your average position, and any indexing or technical issues Google finds.

In depth

Google Search Console is the view from Google's side of the fence. It tells you which searches your site actually showed up for, how often people clicked, and where you ranked — the kind of organic traffic data you can't get from your website analytics alone. It also flags problems: pages Google can't index, mobile usability errors, and broken schema markup that could keep you out of the results.

For a contractor chasing local SEO, this is where you learn what's really working. You can see that you rank well for 'kitchen remodel' in one town but are invisible in the next, or that a page gets impressions but no clicks because the title is weak. Those are concrete, fixable signals — they tell you which pages to strengthen and which terms are within reach instead of guessing.

The misconception is that Search Console and Google Analytics 4 are the same thing — they're not. Analytics tracks what people do after they arrive; Search Console tracks how they found you in search and whether Google can read your site at all. WellBuilt verifies the property on every client site, submits the sitemap, fixes indexing errors first, and mines the query report to find the local terms a contractor can realistically win.

Worked example

Example

A roofer's Search Console report shows a service-area page getting impressions but almost no clicks; WellBuilt rewrites its title and meta description, and clicks climb without changing the ranking.
